Basic Literacy
  • Each month from September through May, the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Cumberland County works with school librarians to invite children in first, second, and third grades to the library for the Bookworm Club. During Bookworm Club meetings, children are introduced to a new book genre, such as science fiction, historical fiction, mystery, fiction, and biography, and a story from that genre is read and discussed. A craft and snack related to that day’s story are part of the monthly meeting.
  • The Free Library of Philadelphia joined forces with the PA Department of Labor and Industry’s CareerLink to provide a program titled Workplace Wednesdays. Using grant funding, the library hosts weekly sessions on the employment process. Career counselors and coaches present sessions on various topics including résumé and cover letter writing, using library resources in a job search, interviewing, and online job searching.
  • Books-Go-Round is the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library bookmobile that visits hundreds of preschool children and their teachers at area child care centers, Head Starts, Early Learning Centers, and private preschool programs each month. Books-Go-Round’s storytime focuses on the components of emergent literacy: print motivation, narrative skills, and print awareness. Each 30-minute visit to the bookmobile includes a story and other fun learning activities with a professional educator, as well as time for checking out books.
